SENA Ends the Debate between Bluetooth® and Mesh Intercom™

July 25, 2024

Bluetooth® may seem like the ideal solution because it is well-known, simple, and affordable. However, in some uses, this technology shows some limitations. Is SENA’s more premium Mesh Intercom™ technology really necessary? And if so, for which needs? SENA, the leader in communication systems for motorcyclists, addresses the questions that many riders have.

BLUETOOTH® TECHNOLOGY

Bluetooth technology is well-known in the world of wireless communications. It allows devices to connect to each other over short distances using low-energy radio waves.

Here are some key features of Bluetooth® technology:

  • Connection: The first rider connects to the nearest rider. Then, each rider connects to the next, forming a chain linking all riders. However, if a rider leaves the group or goes out of range, the connection is broken and must be reconnected.
  • Range: From 100m (SENA SF1) to 2km (SENA 20S EVO).
  • Riders in Conversation: From 2 riders (SENA 5S) to 8 riders (SENA 20S EVO).
  • Use with an Accessory: Bluetooth technology allows connecting a wireless intercom to a smartphone or GPS. Riders can make calls, listen to music, and receive GPS instructions hands-free, making it more convenient and safer. No need to handle your smartphone while riding!
  • Intercom Mode with Bluetooth: Bluetooth technology allows riders to communicate with their passenger or with a limited number of other riders in their group.
  • Compatibility: Bluetooth is widely compatible with a multitude of devices such as phones, GPS units, and other motorcycle accessories. It also allows communication via your SENA intercom with other riders using Bluetooth devices from other brands.
  • Bluetooth and SENA: All SENA intercoms have Bluetooth technology to pair with an accessory like a smartphone or GPS.
  • Specificity of SENA Spider: The Spider RT1 and Spider ST1 models use Bluetooth technology to connect to accessories like smartphones or GPS. However, for multi-rider conversations, they rely exclusively on SENA Mesh Intercom™ technology.

SENA MESH INTERCOM™ TECHNOLOGY

SENA Mesh Intercom™ technology revolutionizes motorcycle intercoms by establishing a direct and simultaneous connection between all riders in the group. Thanks to this mesh network, there is no break in conversation if a rider is momentarily out of range.

Here are some key features of SENA Mesh Intercom™ technology:

  • Connection: SENA’s Mesh Intercom™ technology creates a mesh network where each rider connects directly to all others. The robustness of the connection is guaranteed: if a rider is temporarily out of range, the group communication remains intact. The rider reconnects automatically as soon as they return. No need to redo the connection process as with Bluetooth.
  • Use with an Accessory: It is the Bluetooth technology included in all SENA intercoms that allows this functionality. You can have a conversation via Mesh Intercom™ technology while using Bluetooth to continue following GPS navigation instructions.
  • Intercom Mode with Mesh: In “Open Mesh” mode, Mesh technology allows switching between nine channels and easily connecting with one button, supporting an almost unlimited number of users. For private conversations, “Group Mesh” mode supports up to 24 participants, enhancing coordination and safety during large group rides.
  • Range: 2km and can extend up to 8km with a group of at least 6 riders.
  • Riders in Conversation: Up to 24 riders in a private “Group Mesh” group, with a SENA 30K, for example. And an almost unlimited number in “Open Mesh” mode.
  • Compatibility: SENA’s Mesh Intercom technology is proprietary and requires SENA-branded intercoms for a Mesh connection. It is also possible to connect via Bluetooth with intercoms from other brands, except for the Spider ST1 and RT1 models which use Mesh exclusively for conversations.

In conclusion, choose Bluetooth® Intercom technology if you want to communicate with your passenger or a small group with limited range at a very affordable price. For example, the SENA SMH5 allows communication with your passenger, listening to music, or receiving GPS instructions for €99.

Opt instead for an intercom like the SENA 50R with Mesh Intercom™ technology if you want to go on rides with large groups, with more robust communication, extended range, automatic reconnection, and an almost unlimited capacity for rider connections in “Open Mesh” mode.
